Inter Miami head coach Gerardo Martino had special praise for Lionel Messi, who broke two Major League Soccer records on Saturday evening.

Messi became the player in MLS history to record five assists in one match and six goals in one match after registering one goal and five assists in the 6-2 win over New York Red Bulls.

The big win puts Inter Miami at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference standings, but Martino says what Messi did against Red Bulls was historic.

“All the goals were fundamental to the match, but Leo did something historic tonight with five assists and one goal,” Martino said, according to ESPN.

“But I can’t forget the three goals from Suarez and the two goals from Rojas. The first one, well, both, but the first Rojas goal was great.

“But because of Leo’s technical aspect on the assist, I will choose Luis Suárez’s scissor goal as my favorite.”

Martino also recalls a similar performance by Messi with the national team, where he did not score.

“Messi played exceptional games at Barcelona during my time with him,” he said.

“But I also remember a semi-final with Paraguay in the Copa America in Chile, where he didn’t score a goal and was still the best player on the pitch.

“In Barcelona he had a match against Valencia where we lost 2-0 and then won 3-2 with three goals from him. And there was another match against Sevilla where we lost 1-0 and then he scored three goals and we won 4-1.

“I always say this, and at the moment it’s redundant, but he’s always doing something new. Being involved in all six goals of a team’s 6-2 is something that will be difficult to see again.”
