LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University softball team ended the regular season with a pair of losses to McNeese Saturday afternoon at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.

Southeastern (42-13, 17-7 SLC) will be the No. 2 seed in the 2024 North Oaks Health System Southland Conference Championships, scheduled for Tuesday-Friday at North Oak Park on the SLU campus. McNeese (38-18, 22-2 SLC) is the top player in the tournament after winning third straight SLC regular season title

The Lady Lions and Cowgirls will be the top seeds in a North Oaks Health System SLC Championships field that includes UIW, Nicholls, Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and HCU. Tickets can be purchased at www.Southland.org/tickets.

The top two seeds get a bye on day two. Southeastern’s first game in the tournament is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., with McNeese opening tournament play Wednesday at 11 a.m.

In the opener, McNeese used a four-run sixth inning to rally for a 5–3 win to secure the series. Chloe Magee And Bailey Krolczyk led Southeastern with two goals each in the loss.

SLU jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the nightcap, but McNeese came back for a 6-2 victory. Krolczyk went 2-for-3 in the loss, while Lexi Johnson had an RBI triple.

Game One – McNeese 5, Southeast 3

Southeastern Ellie DuBois (13-5) and McNeese starter Alexis Dibbley tied the score until the Lady Lions broke through in the top of the third inning. Cam Goodman walked and scored later in the inning when Krolczyk reached on a fielder’s choice. Johnson followed with an RBI double to plate Krolczyk and give SLU a 2-0 lead.

After holding the Cowgirls hitless through the first three innings, DuBois ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI single by Corine Poncho cut the Southeast lead to 2-1.

After McNeese took the lead, the teams endured a weather delay of more than two hours at the start of the fifth inning. After the rain delay, Magee singled and then scored on an RBI double by Krolczyk to give SLU a 3-1 lead.

McNeese would claim the lead with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth. Dibbley doubled in the first run of the frame, then a Southeastern error allowed in two more runs. A sacrifice fly by Mariana Torres forced in another unearned run to give the Cowgirls a 5-3 lead.

Consecutive singles through Colleen Kulivan and Goodman tied the game with no outs in the top of the seventh, but Shaelyn Sanders retired the next three Lady Lions to close out the win.

Game Two – McNeese 6, Southeast 2

SLU starter Mary-Cathryn (MC) Comeaux and McNeese’s Ryann Schexnayder (8-2) tied the score until Southeastern broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Krolczyk led off the inning with a single and scored when Johnson followed with an RBI triple. Johnson would score on a Cowgirl error to put the Lady Lions up 2-0.

McNeese answered in the bottom of the fourth. The Cowgirls scored four runs without the benefit of a hit, as the hosts took advantage of a Southeastern error, three walks and a hit by pitch to take a 4-2 lead.

Another Southeastern error accounted for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Schexnayder took out six of the final seven Lady Lions she faced to complete the series sweep.
