Yesterday was the 150th Kentucky Derby and LOTS of celebrities came to the most famous horse race in the world.

The Derby is an American Class I race that takes place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race is run by three-year-old thoroughbreds over a distance of 1+1⁄4 miles (10 furlongs; 2,012 meters). Colts and geldings weigh 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies weigh 121 pounds (55 kg).

The race is held annually on the first Saturday in May and is the first leg of the Triple Crown. The horse race is also called the “Race for the Roses” because the winning horse will be covered in a blanket of roses. The race lasts approximately two minutes and is also known as ‘The most exciting two minutes in sport’ or ‘The fastest two minutes in sport’. That’s what the two-week Kentucky Derby Festival is for.

The race was first held in 1875. Unlike the other Triple Crown races, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky Derby, along with its sister race, the Kentucky Oaks, has been held annually since its first incarnation. They were moved twice in the same year, first due to World War II in 1945 and second due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Additionally, the Derby and Oaks are the oldest continuously held major sporting events in the United States. , as well as the oldest thoroughbred horse races to have been held at the same location since their inception.
