Minneapolis shooting victim was a Minnesota firefighter


Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) -The victim of a fatal shooting early Sunday in Minneapolis has been identified as an off-duty firefighter for a Twin Cities fire department.

The City of Eagan today released a statement indicating Firefighter Joseph Johns tragically passed away while off duty. He had been a member of the Eagan Fire Department since 2015.

Minneapolis police reported today that the shooting happened around 12:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Cedar Avenue South. According to a news release, officers responded after receiving a call indicating two people had been injured in a shooting.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a man in his 40s with possibly life-threatening gunshot wounds. According to the statement, immediate medical care was provided at the scene before the shooting victim was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died.

A second shooting victim later arrived at HCMC in a passenger car. Officials say his injuries were not life-threatening.

Minneapolis police say the preliminary investigation into the incident shows shots were fired at a group of people gathered in a parking lot, leading to a shootout. The news release says homicide detectives are now working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.

According to latest reports, no arrests had been made in this case.
