Prince George’s County officials are considering a proposal to address safety concerns for businesses operating late at night.

The legislation requires establishments operating between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. to work with police to develop a security plan, which must be renewed every three years.

The bill is sponsored by Councilmember Krystal Oriadha.

“We’ve seen such a high number of carjackings and unfortunately robberies and even murder in some of these establishments, and one of the things we need to do is say that our companies need to take an active role as partners,” she says. said. “It would be a safety plan for those key hours, where we know we tend to see more activity at certain businesses and establishments, and so our goal is for them to have plans during those key hours.”

Safety tools include better lighting in and around parking lots, visible cameras and camera boards, on-site security and even a door buzzer system.

It’s a proposal that comes at the same time as provincial police try to piece together a deadly shooting at the MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino, in which a man was shot to death on the top floor of the garage around 5 a.m. Saturday.

And last month, Prince George’s County leaders passed emergency legislation to implement a youth curfew in National Harbor after hundreds of teens were involved in fights.

Now, county leaders are turning their attention to businesses in hopes of ensuring neighborhoods are safe.

“This is another tool needed to ensure that our police work closely with our businesses to ensure that all necessary security measures are in place,” Oriadha said.

If the bill passes, owners will have 180 days to submit their plan. Once approved, they have 90 days to implement the plan or face a fine.

Prince George’s County leaders said they are working on a fund that would help businesses that may need help implementing their safety recommendations.
