Employees at an Apple Store in Towson, Maryland, have approved a strike, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) announced in a statement late Saturday.

The union, which represents Apple retail workers in Maryland, said the date for the work stoppage has not yet been set. The decision to authorize the strike centers on concerns about work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices and wages that are not keeping pace with the cost of living in the area, IAM said.

“We will work respectfully and in good faith with the union that represents our team in Towson,” an Apple spokesperson said.

This development follows the June 2022 vote in which Apple workers in Maryland chose to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, marking the first unionization of retail workers within the tech giant in the United States .

Meanwhile, employees at Apple’s Short Hills, New Jersey store are said to have voted against unionizing Bloomberg News. The Communications Workers of America (CWA), which filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) over Apple’s illegal tactics to undermine unions at its New Jersey store, among others, attributed the defeat to the company’s conduct company.

Apple store workers at the New Jersey store had begun union representation with Communications Workers of America on April 8, said John Nagy, operations manager at the Short Hills store and a member of the organizing committee.

Apple, CWA and the NLRB did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the outcome of the New Jersey worker vote.
