Weikun Lei Obituary – ROBBINS, CA





Weikun Cheng, born August 25, 1953, and his wife, Xiaoping Lei, born January 2, 1957, were killed in a car accident near Robbins, California, on December 19, 2007. They were on their way to Hawaii for a family vacation when the tragedy occurred. They are survived by their son Stephen Si Cheng, a senior at the California Institute of Technology and an accident survivor.

Cheng received his BA and MA in China and his Ph.D. in history from John Hopkins University. His wife received her BS in China and her MA in Computer Science from Loyola College. They married in 1985 and moved to Chico in 1997 when Cheng became a professor of history at California State University, Chico. His wife was a programmer at the University of California, Berkeley for two years.

Ke Lei, born June 24, 1983, died in the same accident. He was the couple’s cousin and traveled with them on family holidays. Ke earned his BA in Business Management in China and worked for GE in China for two years before earning his MBA degree from the University of Southern California in July 2007. He is survived by his father, Shizhi Lei, and his mother, Ziqiang Cao.

A joint funeral service will be held at Newton Bracewell, 680 Camellia Way, Chico, at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. Immediately following the service there will be a reception at Turandot Restaurant at 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. :00am at 1851 Esplanade, Chico, CA 95926.

A special memorial service will be held at California State University, Chico early in the spring semester of 2008.

Their humor, smile and love for life will be greatly missed.
