Alabama football likely to add Wake Forest transfer DB DaShawn Jones: report

Kalen DeBoer was right. The spring transfer portal may be closed, but Alabama football is reportedly still adding talent at a position of need.

According to 247Sports, the Crimson Tide will likely defend Wake Forest’s DaShawn Jones. Jones played for the Demon Deacons the past two seasons.

“There are guys that we’re working on that are going to have visitors or we’re trying to get them to come to campus,” DeBoer said Thursday. “So I think ultimately I feel good about the direction we’re going, with improving the roster, improving the roster. And that’s the point.

Jones had two threes as a cornerback for Wake Forest last season. He spent three seasons in Winston-Salem before entering the portal during the spring term.

Alabama saw its defensive group decimated by the NFL Draft and the transfer portal, with several leaving after Nick Saban’s retirement. DeBoer pointed to the group as a position where the Tide could look to add numbers during the spring season.

Jones adds experience to a young group after spending three seasons at Wake Forest. Last season he made a total of 37 tackles, breaking up two passes.

He will be Alabama’s second transfer portal cornerback pickup out of North Carolina State. The Crimson Tide also added former Charlotte corner Kameron Howard during the spring.

Jones had visited Alabama before the report. He posted two photos on social media from Tuscaloosa, the most recent on Sunday.

The spring window for accessing the portal is closed after May 1. Players already in the portal can still sign with new schools.
