A coalition of Democratic, independent and Republican lawmakers in the Alaska House of Representatives have defeated a bill that would ban transgender girls from playing on girls’ sports teams.

Lawmakers opposed to the bill introduced dozens of amendments, and after debate on a single amendment lasted more than an hour Thursday, lawmakers voted to allow further discussion until Saturday.
