Aurora forecast for Mass. – NBC Boston

Friday night will likely remain strong with the best views of the Northern Lights of the weekend, but there is still a chance to see them Sunday evening in Massachusetts and other parts of New England.

It won’t drop as far south or bring the same vibrancy as Friday, which registered as Kp 9 – the highest level on the geomagnetic storm scale. But more charged particles at a Kp 6 will give the northern part of the country another look.

For New England, the biggest hurdle will be scattered cloud cover Sunday evening that will obscure visibility in some spots. By morning the sky will be clear, but the question is whether the light show will continue.

Look north, as far away from light noise as possible.

The northern lights, also called aurora borealis, are a moving wave of light that you see in the night sky.

What causes the colors of the Northern Lights?

It takes fifteen hours for these charged particles, emitted by the sun, to reach the Earth and enter through the poles. When they enter the atmosphere, they interact with oxygen (pink and green) and nitrogen (purple and blue) to produce excited and ionized gases that illuminate a specific color based on the gas and how strong the solar storm is.

I was able to catch the Northern Lights in Easthampton through the clouds – the most surreal thing I have ever seen. I never expected to see them in my home state
