(CBS DETROIT) – A Lansing man is facing federal charges after allegedly trying to steal a gun from a police officer during an arrest in April.

Andrial Ched Ortiz, 29, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Federal prosecutors allege that when officers tried to arrest Ortiz on April 10, he tried to steal guns from Lansing police officers, according to a news release. Officials say he was in possession of two firearms, which he could not have due to a previous felony conviction.

Prosecutors say he fired a Glock 43X, wounding an officer.

“Today’s indictment reflects our continued efforts to protect the streets from the danger of those who cannot legally own firearms,” U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a statement. “I am grateful that officers on scene were able to minimize the damage caused and that everyone is safe.”

Ortiz’s next hearing is May 20.
