Arizona Opera has announced its lineup for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

The season will feature classic productions, the Company Premiere of a new adventure opera, a new Beyond Downtown program to bring opera to broader Arizona audiences, and an expanded recital series featuring one of opera’s brightest stars.

The new season will kick off this fall with Arizona Opera’s new Beyond Downtown program, a new offering in Arizona Opera’s McDougall RED Series. Beyond Downtown will present live opera performances in communities throughout Arizona beginning in this fall and continuing into the spring.

The season’s in-theater productions start in January and continue through the year at Symphony Hall in Phoenix, 75 N. 2nd St., leading off with Puccini’s beloved classic “La Bohème.” The Main Stage Series continues with Verdi’s masterpiece “Aida” in April, and extends into the fall with “Zorro” in September and October, presented as part of the McDougall RED Series.

“We are grateful to present another diverse and captivating lineup for our 2024-25 season,” Joseph Specter, Arizona Opera president and general director, shared in a press release. “The season begins with an exciting new partnership that extends our reach beyond the theater, and features a significant expansion of our annual recital series.”

“La Bohème”: 7:30 pm Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025; 2 pm Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025

Giacomo Puccini’s beloved classic will open in January and transport audiences to the streets of 19th century Paris for one of the world’s most timeless and moving love stories.

“Aida”: 7:30 pm Saturday, April 12, 2025; 2 pm Sunday, April 13, 2025

The splendor of Egypt comes to life through this visually arresting, projection-based concert production in its first Arizona Opera performances in over a decade. “Aida” tells the story of forbidden love amidst political intrigue and war.

“Zorro”: 7:30 pm Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025; 2 pm Sunday, September 28, 2025

Rounding out the season in the fall of 2025 is the adventure opera with score and libretto by Héctor Armienta. “Zorro” follows the return of Diego de La Vega to his native pueblo in Los Angeles, where he encounters old flames, tyrannical rulers, and the plight of the oppressed.

Stephen Costello in Recital: 7:30 pm Tuesday, April 1, 2025, Katzin Concert Hall at Arizona State University, 50 Gammage Parkway, Tempe

In addition to its season productions and the new Beyond Downtown program, Arizona Opera’s 2024-25 season will present celebrated tenor Stephen Costello in recitals. Costello, who led the cast of The Metropolitan Opera’s production of “La Bohème” this season and who returns to The Met next year in the company’s premiere of “Moby Dick,” will be accompanied by pianist Anthony Manoli.
